The Black Death (1346-1353) is the most destructive pandemic in human history. Primarily caused by the bubonic plague, it was said to have been spread by flea-infested rats who ravaged Europe and parts of Asia & North Africa. It is estimated to have killed up to 200 million people, including almost 60% of Europe’s entire population in less than a decade. The plague violently changed the course of human history, especially in Europe and created an immense upheaval in society, economies and religious practices that centered around the fear and consequences of such an unforgiving, relentless disease.
