Ashoka the Great (304 BC-232 BC) was an emperor of the Mauryan Dynasty who ruled almost the entire Indian subcontinent at the height of his rule. Witnessing the scale of human destruction caused due to his conquest in Kalinga, Ashoka renounced violence and converted to Buddhism while also promoting its spread across Ancient Asia. He is well-known for his many Ashoka Pillars and Edicts and the sculpture of four lions back-to-back atop the pillar in Sarnath has been adopted as the National Emblem of India.
