Now in the Mauritshuis Museum at The Hague, Netherlands. This Dutch Baroque painting is considered one of Rembrandt’s first masterpieces. It was bought in 1866 by the Mauritshuis for 32,000 DFL ($420,000, inflation adjusted). A group of surgeons look on as physician Dr Nicholas Tulp gives an anatomy lecture. Ironically, the painting is celebrated for ignoring the Baroque era’s anatomical focus & portraying the psychological instead, highlighting the keen reactions & curiosity of every observer.
